Physical Education
Philosophy - The connection of mind, body, and spirit is emphasized in the physical education curriculum; especially in terms of practicing good sportsmanship, developing good decision making while developing sound moral reasoning. These qualities are great attributes achieved through physical activity in an enjoyable way.
Course Description - The physical education program stresses the physical, mental and social development of each student, all of which are acquired through participation in a variety of individual and team sports. The students participate in the following activities: soccer, volleyball, floor hockey, basketball, badminton, tae bo/pilates, circuit training, fitness testing, softball/kickball , and ultimate Frisbee. It stresses the importance of developing the skills necessary to ensure the likelihood of participating in physical activity throughout life.
Health
Philosophy - The connection of mind, body, and spirit is emphasized in the health curriculum. The spiritual component is vital to living a balanced life. Health classes stress the importance of the meaning of life and the value of prayer in both sickness and health. The journaling and reflective essays help to reinforce this integral part of education.
Course Description - The purpose of the health program is to increase the students’ knowledge of personal and community health. It stress the importance of developing the students’ awareness of the benefits of making daily life choices and how they affect their physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social health. Topics covered range from social, emotional, and physical health to the study of the human body and its systems. Other units include disease prevention, drug use and abuse, relationships, and first aid/safety education. |
