ACADEMY OF THE HOLY FAMILY

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT CONTRACT

In accepting international students at the Academy of the Holy Family, we strive to immerse them in American culture and help them achieve fluency in speaking and understanding English.  It is, therefore, most important that each international student cooperate in the total program of the school.

Every student is to arrive at class on time, with books and proper classroom materials.  If the classroom teacher and the ESL instructor feels that she is capable of completing  the assigned work, the student is expected to do so.  Study periods are considered a class, and students must report punctually and be prepared to study.

The student’s native language should not be spoken in any class except with permission of the teacher, as, for example, to clarify directions or define unfamiliar terms.  Students speaking a foreign language should not converse with one another in that language when girls who do not understand are present.

Outside of class time, i.e., in the dormitories, cafeteria, recreational rooms, international students should make a serious effort to associated with English speaking girls and attempt to speak English.  Allowances for the native language will be made for those girls who come in August speaking no English, but at a date determined by the faculty and staff, usually early November, only English should be spoken everywhere.

The scheduled vacation dates in the academic calendar should be strictly adhered to.  Girls are expected to leave the school during these breaks.  Those who have no near relatives or sponsors should arrange to accept invitations from American students, with permission, and with the approval of the school.  These vacations include Thanksgiving break (late November), Christmas, February vacation, Easter weekend (if not part of the Spring vacation, April Vacation, and summer vacation.

Students should leave and return only on the given dates.  It is preferred that the school make airline, train and/or bus arrangements to coincide with the trips made by the school to the airport or to bus/train stations.  If exceptions are to be made, transportation arrangements must be made and paid for by the family of the student.

Finally, if, by Thanksgiving break in late November, a student has failed to become integrated into the school community, and insists on speaking her own language, associating only with students from her own country, etc., the school reserves the right to notify the parents that the student’s stay at the Academy is proving to be of little advantage to her, and the girl may be asked to return home.

The Academy values its international students, and encourages communication with the parents throughout the year, in order to provide the students with every possible advantage to make the year(s) spent here profitable, enjoyable, and rewarding.  We ask that parents contact us frequently during the year, particularly if there are questions of policy or practice.
