Dear Class of 2008,

Schools have mottos and brands to express their spirit in short, memorable ways.  When I think of your class, I think of our school motto- “Pursue knowledge; embrace the truths of Christ; respond to the needs of others.”  To some that may sound like a “mouthful” but let me explain.

You have pursued knowledge in various ways- by completing your studies at AHF in preparation for college; achieving honor roll so often; being members of the National Honor Society; taking courses at Three Rivers Community College, participating in the People to People program and the Quinnebaug Valley Music Festival.  All of you have been accepted into colleges.  You have pursued knowledge.

I have watched you embrace the truths of Christ in different ways. You show your love for Christ by your mature reverence at Mass and loving reception of Jesus in Holy Communion. You’ve participated in the Legion of Mary and Top-Life, our pro-life club; some of you are altar servers and one of you has been a Eucharistic Minister for quite a while.  You’ve participated in retreats and prayer services. This year in a theology course, I learned that a Saint pointed out that after the Presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist, he is most present in others. You’ve embraced this and have shown it through your kindness to others.  It has been so pleasant to see you simply smile and greet both students and staff in the school hallways and classrooms.  You’ve been cordial to students and adults with whom you didn’t agree.  Sisters have commented on your ability to work things out and grow stronger in support and friendship. Your class is special in that you have shown a good, positive spirit; you’ve let your light shine before men.

Responding to the needs of others- some of us tonight are very aware of sacrifices you’ve made for your family. Your responding to the needs of your family by putting aside your personal joys for various family situations is appreciated.  The Class of 2008 has responded to the needs of AHF in a special way- we are a small school but an active school- your class is the first that I know of in which 100% of you have participated in drama.  Your class is outstanding in supporting our visual and performing arts programs. You’ve participated in our sports program and various clubs. Also, in terms of responding to the needs of others, think of the senior projects you completed this Spring- working in the radiology department, nursing, social work, teaching- careers that focus on others.  Some of you received service awards during class day exercises this morning. You have certainly shown your imbibing of the sprit of AHF.

What does all of this mean for your future?  You may know the song by the Carpenters- “We’ve only just begun.” Carry on the spirit you absorbed at AHF.  I suggest you make our school motto your personal motto during life.  Pursue knowledge always- we never know everything, and learning new things makes life exciting.  It allows us to keep a youthful spirit and interact with others more.  Embrace the truths of Christ- Christ shows us the way to be happy on earth and to be with Him and our loved ones in Heaven- embrace Him your entire lives- you’ll always have a deep inner peace by praying, receiving the Sacraments and living as He teaches.  Jesus is with you always, please remain with Him. Respond to the needs of others- when are you truly happy?  When you focus on yourselves or when you reach out and help others?  Remember how you have felt when you did something for someone else without expecting a reward.  I’m willing to bet you were full of joy.  Thank you Class of 2008, for all you have been and will be.  As of tonight, AHF is your alma mater, which means your nourishing mother.  AHF has tried to nourish you with knowledge, Christ and charity. Bring the spirit of your alma mater, the Academy of the Holy Family, with you wherever you go.  God bless you.
