GENERAL INFORMATION FOR BOARDING STUDENTS
MEDICATION: Any medication, including aspirin that a student brings with her must be given to the nurse or to the Sister in charge of the dormitory, who will dispense it to the students as necessary. Medicines, including over the counter medications, may not be kept in any girl’s cupboard or locker.
SPENDING MONEY: A boarding student must have enough spending money for her needs, including personal items, snacks, weekend outings, etc. If a student has a large amount of money, it will be held for her in the office and will be given to her at her request. The school does not lend money. Therefore, a student should receive a check from home periodically—this may be cashed at the office. Typically, parents have chosen to send the business manager a large amount of money to be kept in the student’s name. On weekends monies are then dispersed to the students.
TRAVEL: Please note: no early dismissal will be allowed since it involves the missing of classes by the student and the disruption of the school schedule. When a student is leaving for the weekend or vacation, the earliest train or bus she will be allowed to take out of New London will be at 3:00 p.m. If this does not allow her to reach her destination at a convenient hour, she will have to leave on the following day. A student returning by car must arrive at the school no later than 7:00 p.m. Sunday evening. A student returning to school by train or bus must plan to arrive in New London between 5:30 and6:30 p.m. on Sunday evenings. This makes it possible for the drivers of the vans to pick up all returning students at one time. Otherwise, the students will have to provide her own transportation to the Academy. A student arriving by plane must arrange for an afternoon or early evening arrival at T.F. Greene Airport in Providence/Warwick, Rhode Island.
VISITING: No boarding student will be permitted to visit another person’s home overnight without a written permission from her parent/guardian.
VACATION: Arrangements must be made for all residents to spend major vacations away from the Academy. This includes the Christmas recess, the winter break in February and the Spring break in April. Experience has taught us that the students need a vacation away from the school at least during these weeks. If students are unable to return home during these times, they are to make other arrangements, such as staying at a friend’s house in the U.S. Some families have chosen to visit the U.S. at these times, to go sight-seeing with their daughter who boards at the Academy. There are three major vacations during the school year; please do not ask for a special permission for your daughter to take a vacation when school is in session.
NO SMOKING POLICY: Smoking is not permitted at the Academy. A student who does not observe this rule will serve an in-school suspension, and dismissed on the second offense.
